When our client approached us, their vision was clear: Bradford needed a platform built specifically for its independent food scene, something modern, scalable, and community driven. Not another generic delivery app, but a system designed to empower local vendors while giving customers a seamless, reliable experience.

That vision became BD Bites.

BD Bites is a location focused food ordering and discovery platform built to connect customers directly with Bradford’s best independent takeaways, dessert spots, home based kitchens, and specialty food vendors. The goal wasn’t just convenience it was ownership, visibility, and growth for local businesses that are often overshadowed by national chains.

We developed BD Bites as a scalable marketplace platform, combining:

  • Realtime order management
  • Vendor dashboards
  • Integrated payments
  • Live order tracking
  • Customer loyalty capabilities
  • Expansion ready infrastructure for city to city growth

From branding and UX design to platform architecture and vendor onboarding strategy, every element was built with long-term growth in mind. The system is structured not just for Bradford, but for structured expansion across the UK.

BD Bites isn’t simply a food delivery service.

It’s a digital infrastructure for local food economies.

PWA

As the project scope evolved, the client made a strategic decision regarding launch infrastructure. Rather than investing heavily into native iOS and Android applications from day one, they chose to build BD Bites as a Progressive Web App (PWA). Launching at a city level meant agility, speed to market, and controlled overhead were critical. A PWA allows users to install the platform directly from their browser, access it like a native app, receive push notifications, and enjoy fast, app like performance without the friction of App Store approvals or large upfront development costs.
This approach enables BD Bites to validate demand, refine operations, and scale vendor onboarding efficiently while maintaining the flexibility to transition into fully native applications once regional traction is proven. It’s a lean, intelligent launch strategy designed to prioritise growth and sustainability over unnecessary early stage expenditure.

The PWA also gave the team the flexibility to iterate quickly based on real user feedback. Features, workflows, and vendor tools could be adjusted instantly, without waiting for app store approvals. This approach allowed BD Bites to launch lean, learn fast, and refine the platform in real time, all while setting up a foundation for smooth expansion to new cities and, eventually, native apps.
Beyond speed and flexibility, the PWA approach also shaped how the team approached user engagement and vendor onboarding. By centralising updates and features in a single web-based platform, the client could introduce new functionalities — like advanced search filters, stackable pricing options, and live order tracking — directly to users and vendors without delay. This meant improvements could be tested immediately, allowing the team to see what resonated with customers and what supported vendor efficiency most effectively.

From a technical perspective, the PWA allowed the platform to scale modularly. Each new feature or vendor integration could be added as a separate module, reducing the risk of disrupting existing
workflows and making it easier to expand the platform to additional sectors, cuisines, or cities over time. This modularity also meant the client could explore integrations with tools like Shopify, Shipday, and ticket printing hardware in parallel, tailoring the system to the needs of each vendor while maintaining a consistent customer experience.

In essence, the PWA was not only a launch tool but a flexible backbone for experimentation, learning, and sustainable growth. It provided the foundation for a platform that could evolve organically, responding to real-world usage, local market dynamics, and long-term expansion goals without the friction typically associated with native app development.

User-Centric Design & Smart Food Discovery

From day one, the client wanted BD Bites to feel simple, intuitive, and enjoyable for users. Our focus was on creating a user-first UX/UI, making it easy to browse, order, and discover local food. To achieve this, we separated the platform into clear sectors for different food types, takeaways, desserts, home kitchens, and specialty vendors, so customers could instantly find what they were craving. On top of that, we added smart filters and sorting options. Users can browse by cuisine, dietary preferences, price range, delivery time, or popularity, helping them find the perfect option in seconds. The result is a platform that’s not just functional, but genuinely enjoyable to navigate, keeping customers engaged while helping vendors stand out.

BD Bites also supports flexible, stackable pricing options, allowing vendors to offer add-ons and customisations for each order. For example, a customer could add cheese for 20p and brown sauce for 50p, with each option automatically added to the total. This system gives vendors full control over upsells and customisations while keeping the ordering process simple and transparent for customers.

Vendor Dashboards & Efficient Operations

For the client, supporting vendors was just as important as creating a great customer experience. BD Bites includes dedicated dashboards that let vendors manage everything from a single place. They can update menus, set prices, track stock, and manage orders in real time, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations without extra hassle.

The dashboards also provide analytics and insights, helping vendors understand order trends, peak hours, and customer preferences. This data allows them to make informed decisions, optimise menus, and plan promotions effectively. By giving vendors the tools to run their business efficiently, BD Bites strengthens the local food ecosystem while ensuring every vendor can shine.

Live Order Management & Vendor Integration

To make operations seamless, BD Bites integrates live ticket printing through PCO58S and PrinterCo devices. Every order placed on the platform is instantly sent to the vendor’s printer, reducing manual entry and keeping kitchens running efficiently even during peak hours.

Each vendor also has a dedicated Shopify backend, giving them full control over their menus, pricing, inventory, and product details. This means vendors can manage their offerings with the same flexibility and reliability as a standalone e-commerce store while still being part of the BD Bites marketplace.

On the customer side, live order tracking is powered through Shipday. Users can follow their orders in real time from preparation to dispatch, and they also receive SMS alerts to stay updated every step of the way. This ensures transparency and a smooth experience for everyone.

By combining Shopify for vendor management, instant ticket printing, live order tracking, and SMS alerts, BD Bites creates a modern, end to end solution that works for both vendors and customers, keeping everyone informed, organised, and connected.
